  • What We Do

    The Cooper Society promotes the study and appreciation of the life, works, and ideas of James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851). We aim to provide useful information to scholars, students, and readers and a venue for fellow Cooper enthusiasts to connect.

    Supporting Scholarship, Connecting People

    • Comprehensive Website  Visit our main website for the most comprehensive Cooper resource on the web. We have a large selection of scholarly articles, biographic and bibliographic reference information, electronic texts of Cooper works, and more.
    • The James Fenimore Cooper Society Journal  Our main publication, The James Fenimore Cooper Society Journal contains scholarly articles, research notes, reviews, columns, and Cooper-related news. A subscription to the Journal, which is usually published two to three times a year, is complementary when you join the Cooper Society.
    • Conferences  The Cooper Society sponsors scholarly panels at the annual American Literature Association Conference and also supports the biennial Fenimore Cooper Conference hosted by the State University of New York College at Oneonta.
    • Awards  Every two years, the Cooper Society awards its James Franklin Beard award, named for a distinguished Cooper scholar (1919-1989), to a pre-tenure scholar whose work makes a notable contribution to Cooper studies.

    The Cooper Society was founded in 1989 (the bicentennial of Cooper's birth) to bring together scholars, students, and readers from around the world who are interested in the life and work of James Fenimore Cooper.
